Catching a train by the door

A railway station. A hero alone on a platform. He needs to catch a small train that is waiting. It is the humblest of trains: a railcar, only two coaches. It will not go far, stop often.

The hero's limbs are frozen. But he's fighting it.

The door is five paces away, there is a signal for the train to leave.

His legs do not move but he's reaching for the handle, his arm is stretching thin.

The train will be leaving any second now. But he's gripping the handle, it just isn't possible that he could still miss the train. Train doors are sometimes hard to open. He's opening it. It is now open, he's holding on to it. It isn't possible that he could still miss the train. But he still can't move.

In the black car

It is dark. I'm alone in a large black car. It is sitting in a parking space outside a low building. We will be leaving here. But possibly not until tomorrow.

The engine is running, I've noticed that before. The key is in the ignition. I'm turning it to switch off the engine. But the noise that sounds like the noise of of a running engine continues. If it is the engine, then the noise should increase when I put my foot on the accelerator. I do that. The noise increases.

I seem to have had my eyes closed. Opening them I realize that the car is now moving. It is  sliding towards another car close to the building. As far as I can make out in this dusk and gloom the right headlight of my car (off) seems to be aiming for the left backlight of the other car. But then I'm sliding past, the two edges missing each other by a hairbreadth.

Wondering why my car started moving in the first place I realize that it must have been held in place by the brake. Then I pressed the accelerator creating a force that overcame the brake and set the car in motion. But I must stop or I will crash into the building. To stop the engine I turn the key to the left stop. But the noise still doesn't die. Then I have a last idea: pulling the key out of the ignition must kill the engine.

It worked! The noise is gone.

But now the car starts rolling backwards. The parking space must be sloping towards the street. I'm putting my foot on the brake - without effect. I'm scared that the car will roll onto the street and there in the darkness a passing vehicle will crash into it.

I'm thinking this car has a brake servo, the brake isn't working because I pulled the key from the ignition. Now I'm frantic to push it back in. But with the darkness and my panic I'm fumbling and failing; the car is rolling.

I'm just hoping, hoping that this is a bad dream. But it isn't, I know it isn't.

Finally, the car edging into the street, it's left backlight sticking into the right lane, it finally stops moving. Expecting a collision at any moment I'm praying: let it be a dream.
